The Hidden Meaning of Silent Letters: Strategies to Decipher Meaning and Spelling

Friday, February 4th 8:30am-11:30am CT (Central Time)

Virtual Workshop

Students are often thrown off by silent letters, which appear to not correspond to any sound in the word’s pronunciation. Because many students aren’t aware of the patterns or meanings behind silent letters, they resort to guessing when spelling unfamiliar words. How can we efficiently teach them when to use “night” versus “knight” or “sent” versus “scent”?

By teaching students about the meanings behind silent letters, we can help them to become more successful spellers! Discover the patterns that anchor meaning to spelling and minimize the need for rote memorization. During our training on February 4th, Executive Director Jennifer Hasser will present strategies to assist students of all ages and stages. Learn activities for mapping the connection between phonemes and graphemes that are thoughtful and fun! Attendees will gain digital materials for our Sound Track phoneme-grapheme manipulation exercise and more.

Attendees will receive a Certificate of Attendance and digital materials via email after the event.
