Learning the relationship between written symbols (letters) and sounds (phonemes) does not come easily to everyone. Dyslexia affects 20% of the population and is the most common of all neuro-cognitive disorders. The nationwide push for early screenings for dyslexia and access to structured literacy interventions is an important step in the right direction. However, many parents and educators don't understand the impact of comments like "You can read this, it's easy" or "We just went over this sight word, don't you remember?".

As the parent of a child with dyslexia, Executive Director Jennifer Hasser, M.Ed., knows firsthand the challenges students with learning differences face. She has devoted her life to leveling the playing field. During her presentation, she will discuss the observable signs and symptoms of dyslexia for students of varying levels, the value and impact of dyslexia simulations, and the importance of considering the ways we teach and encourage students with this learning difference. Afterward, we will welcome questions during our Q&A portion.
